Who Might Need Rhinoplasty Surgery?
Rhinoplasty may be performed to enhance the appearance of a nose, correct disfigurement from trauma or injury, or to correct breathing difficulties.
When you have a surgery for cosmetic reasons, your nasal bones must be fully mature. A surgery can be performed at a younger stage if it is to correct a breathing disorder.
How Should you prepare for Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is best done by a Board Certified Board Certified Plastic surgeon. The surgeon can determine whether or not you need the surgery. The surgeon takes a medical record, where he/she will ask questions regarding your current health conditions and medications. The surgeon also conducts a physical examination wherein he examines your nose from the inside out to determine what can be done. Occasionally, you might be asked if you want to have blood tests. If everything looks normal, your surgeon will give you the thumbs up.
Blood Thinners must be avoided in the weeks leading up to surgery. This is why you should inform your surgeon about all medications that you are taking. He will then be able to advise you whether they can be taken before or after the operation. To accelerate the healing, doctors recommend that patients stop smoking before and immediately after surgery.
What are Rhinoplasty’s Risk Factors
The same as any other cosmetic procedure, rhinoplasty has its own risks. These are some of the risks associated with “nose work”.
Nose bleeding
You may experience a numb or tingling nose
Scars
Breathing difficulties
What is Rhinoplasty?
The procedure is simple and can usually be done within an hour or two. The surgeons will use either local anesthesia or general to perform a “nose job”. Local anesthesia that numbs both the nose, and the face, is administered in the simple surgical procedure.
If you are undergoing general anesthesia you will receive a drug via an IV or by inhalation that will render you unconscious.
The surgeon then cuts the nostrils. Occasionally, when the case is harder, the surgeon can also make cuts across the base. The surgeon then starts to reshape cartilage, inner bone and other tissues so that the nose can have a pleasing look.
How long is it before you recover?
After surgery, you will undergo monitoring for several hours. Patients are often asked to wear the nasal splints during the first 7 days. After the surgery, swelling and bruises around the eyes are common. But these side effects generally go away in a matter of days.
